Pop Culture was formed with the sole intent of playing live music for weddings, parties and events of all types. We play floor-filling party classics from the sixties through to the present day.

They typically work as a five piece band: Amy - Lead vocals, Raphael - Bass / Lead & Backing vocals, Francisco - Guitar & Backing vocals, Giles - Drums,  & Paul - Saxophone & Keyboards.

What sets them apart

Hard work and attention to detail give Pop Culture the sleek, nuanced sound that does justice to the music they perform. Every song they play is carefully chosen and lovingly arranged. They base their song arrangements closely on recorded original versions but add their own spice to give the most exciting and soulful live performance of the song you could expect to hear.

Why book them

We understand how important it is not just to book a great sounding band for your event but also a professional outfit that can deliver when it matters. They will make sure that the music is a highlight of your event, and also that everything will run smoothly for you, so that you'll have at least one less thing to worry about when you're organising the day.

The Musicians

Amy is a Platinum selling songwriter and our lead vocalist. She’s used to the best company, having shared a stage with  Burt Bacharach, Rudimental and Professor Green. She also has no fear of distinguished guests, having performed our National Anthem at the Tri Nations and the Ashes, and headlined shows for our troops abroad in South East Asia. Her obvious enjoyment in performing to a crowd never fails to delight and energise an audience.

Amy has special licence to perform a lot of our material, because she’s written with the producers responsible for it originally, including Rodney Jerkins (Lady Gaga, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears), Jimmy Harris (Kylie, Pink) and The Tracklacers (Christina Aguilera) .

Paul plays saxophone and keyboards. A graduate of Middlesex University's Jazz degree course, and an experienced big band performer and music production expert, Paul's attention to detail and boundless enthusiasm ensure that all our songs are performed to the very highest standards.

Raphael - An experienced & versatile musician, Raphael's CV includes stage, studio & TV appearances with the likes of Kanye West, Soweto Kinch & Tinie Tempah, and tours supporting Amy Winehouse, Adele, The Police, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Groove Armada & many more. He plays guitar and piano as well as bass.

Giles aka 'Professor PolyRhythms' has rhythm in his soul. When he is not providing the life-pulse for parties, weddings, events, etc. he enjoys playing Afro-Funk beats for the London cognoscenti. If you plan on dancing at your event, this man is more than qualified to provide the beat.

Francisco Bernhard or "Fran", plays guitar & sings backing vocals. He graduated from the Neue Jazzschool in Munich, and took his talents to the south coast of Spain, where he worked as a musician/entertainer with the The Jazzy Boys alongside Geoff Britton (former member of Sir Paul McCartney's Wings). He has a knack of breaking the ice with every audience.

Frequently Asked Questions..

 Q. How long do you play for?
We typically provide 2hrs of live music, split into 2 x 1 hour sets, but other permutations can be arranged.

Q. How much time do you take to set up?
We ideally need 2 hours to set up and sound-check. We will need space to work during this time, and it will be necessary for us to make some noise towards the end of this time (usually for the last 20 minutes or so).

If the room where we'll be playing is busy before we're scheduled to play (e.g. for dinner & speeches, etc.), we'll be more than happy to arrive early and set-up before that activity begins.

We'll also need sufficient time to load in our equipment. Especially where access into the venue and/or performance area is difficult (lot of lifts and stairs & long carrying distances, etc.), it's worth factoring this in to the schedule separately.

Q. How much space do you need?
A minimum of 5m x 4m performance area. Either on a stage or at ground level. We also need access to at least 2 x 240 volt plug sockets.

Q. Do you have all your own equipment?
Yes. The client does not need to provide any equipment for us whatsoever.

Q. Do you have public liability insurance?
Yes. We are covered for £1 million. A copy of the policy can be provided on request.

Q. What other requirements do you have?
We require a room to change costume and store our belongings. Food and drink must be provided unless agreed in advance. Typically a hot meal for evening events, sandwiches etc. for daytime shows and soft drinks throughout (including bottled water during our performance). We need car parking spaces for 2 vehicles (if there is no public parking available), and access to load / unload our equipment beside the venue.

Q. What happens if one of the band is unwell?
At Pop Culture we are aware that our performance is an essential part of your evening, and like any professional operation we have a professional replacement member for each band member, in case of illness or any other unfortunate circumstance that night prevent one of us from performing. The show must go on!

Q. How far will you travel?
We are based in London, and we are happy to travel anywhere in the world to play, as long as we can cover the cost and time of the journey.

Q. When will you arrive?
This will depend on the schedule of your event. We need enough time to unload our equipment and park our vehicles, and approximately 2 hours with access to the performance area to set up and soundcheck. So this might mean we can arrive 2 and a half hours before our performance time, or it may be necessary to arrive earlier in order to get access to the performance space at a convenient time for you. We are happy to arrive as early as necessary in order to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Q. Do you play music in the break?
Our bassist Raphael is an experienced party DJ, and can programme an appropriate playlist to suit the mood to play through our sound system before and between sets. You're also welcome to provide your own CDs or playlists. We can also offer the services of a professional DJ who works with us regularly, subject to arrangement / fees. If you've already arranged your own DJ, no problem, we'll happily work together with them to make sure the entertainment runs to perfection.

Q. Can I choose what you play?
We pride ourselves upon seamless transitions between songs, and the set-lists we provide have been structured to maximize the effect of the overall performance. For this reason we recommend you leaving us to what we know best, and letting us suggest an appropriate set list for your particular event, based on the information you've given us. This is not to say that you can’t request favourite songs from our repertoire and remove some that you don’t like. We're also happy to learn a song which isn't in our repertoire, such as a 'first dance' request for a wedding, or a favourite song for the birthday girl/boy or guest of honour. We will need some notice if you require us to learn a new song though, to make sure that we can get it to our usual standard of excellence in time!
